Every August, communities across the country recognize Overdose Awareness Month, a time dedicated to remembering lives lost, supporting families affected by substance use, and strengthening efforts to prevent future tragedies.
Here in Monroe County, this month is an opportunity to come together, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and continue building a community where prevention, education, and recovery support are accessible to everyone.
Honoring Lives and Raising Awareness
Overdose Awareness Month culminates with International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, but its message extends throughout the entire month: every life matters, and every conversation has the potential to make a difference.
Awareness starts with understanding. By learning about substance use, recognizing risk factors, and supporting those who may be struggling, we can help create a more informed and compassionate community.
Community Partnerships Making an Impact
Addressing substance use takes a community-wide effort, and Monroe County is fortunate to have organizations working together to support prevention and recovery.
One of those partners is NorthBound & Co., which continues expanding its impact through a new location and growing partnerships throughout the region. Their work provides individuals and families with access to peer support, wellness programs, recovery resources, and a welcoming community built on connection and hope.

Prevention Happens Every Day
Throughout Monroe County, prevention efforts continue year-round through community outreach, educational programs, public awareness campaigns, and local partnerships.
These initiatives help residents access reliable information, encourage healthy decision-making, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations about substance use and mental health.
Prevention is most effective when it starts before a crisis occurs, and when communities work together to support one another.
Back-to-School: A Time for Connection
As students prepare to return to school, August is also a reminder for families to stay connected and keep communication open.
Back-to-school season offers a natural opportunity to talk with young people about making healthy choices, handling stress, and knowing where to turn for support when challenges arise.
Simple conversations can help build trust, strengthen confidence, and encourage young people to seek help when they need it.
Moving Forward Together
Overdose Awareness Month reminds us that awareness leads to action. Whether you’re attending a local event, sharing resources, supporting a loved one, or learning more about prevention, every effort helps strengthen Monroe County.
Together, we can continue building a community rooted in education, compassion, recovery, and hope. When Monroe County comes together, we can make a difference; one conversation, one connection, and one life at a time.
